She Contains Multitudes is my new ever-evolving cabaret show. In this performance, I’m exploring the concepts of dreams, refuge, and what I'm calling the banality of resistance.
This work is very much inspired by the cruelty of the current regime in America, but also by the elected opposition's vapid "resistance". I think about how much our culture - food, science, music, literature - has been shaped by those who sought and found refuge in New York City and elsewhere in America - including members of my own family many generations ago.
Inspired by my experience as an opera singer in rock ‘n roll, my second studio album Sororicide takes the form of a modern song cycle or concept album and explores the concept of an essential voice through a collage of musical styles. Alongside my original music, fragments of art songs, poetry, and deconstructed arias are repurposed to tell the story of an artist whose inner voice is so deafening, she believes it to be that of a parasitic twin she absorbed in utero. A nod to Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s Die sieben Todsünden, the sisters each take on different vocalities, however, it is unclear which is the dominant voice and which is the parasite. After one of the voices falls silent, the artist mourns, reflecting on the loss of a part of herself. As a multimedia performance piece, Sororicide consists of live performance of the album while the players serve as a screen for projected photo collage and animations created by visual artist Ann Kraus.
